POPCORN AND YOUR BRACES

Walking into that movie theater can be torture if you have braces.  That smell of cooking popcorn is enticing, however popcorn is one of the worst things you can eat with your braces.

If you have braces, popcorn kernels are your worst enemy.  Even without braces biting into a kernel can be painful and cause a cracked tooth, but with braces it can cause so much more damage.  Those hard kernels can break brackets and bend wires sometimes adding time to your treatment - which no one wants!
Getting those kernel shells stuck in your gums can be annoying days after a handful of popcorn, but with braces it can go undetected.  Those little shells can cause painful swelling of the gum tissue which requires Dr. Suter to remove parts of the braces to clean out the area.  Sometimes a cavity can form where the infection was.

Though it can be hard to resist,  it's best to avoid popcorn as long as you have your braces on.  And as always, give us a call if you have any questions.
